Meghalaya is not a state you can rush. To truly appreciate the mist-covered valleys, the ancient living root bridges, and the incredibly clear rivers, you need time and the right vehicle. We have designed this 7-day road trip itinerary to help you experience the very best of the "Abode of Clouds" without suffering from driver fatigue.
Before you start, make sure you have booked a reliable adventure motorcycle or a premium self-drive car from our Shillong garage.
Arrival & The Shillong City Vibe
Arrive in Shillong, complete your digital check-in with Ride The Hills, and pick up your vehicle from our Police Bazar or Laban hub. Spend your first day acclimatizing to the altitude and exploring the local cafe culture.
Pro Tip: City traffic can be heavy. If you plan to spend the whole day purely inside the city, consider grabbing one of our gearless scooters to zip around to Ward's Lake and the Don Bosco Museum effortlessly.
Laitlum Canyons & Sacred Groves
Drive about 25 km outside the city to the breathtaking Laitlum Canyons for a panoramic, bird's-eye view of the plunging valleys. In the afternoon, ride towards Mawphlang to witness the ancient Sacred Groves, a deeply revered forest protected by local Khasi traditions. Return to Shillong for the night.
The Descent to Cherrapunji (Sohra)
Pack your bags and check out of your Shillong hotel. Today, you tackle the most famous highway in the state. Read our dedicated Shillong to Cherrapunji Route Guide for details on stopping at Elephant Falls and the Mawkdok Dympep Valley View Point. Arrive in Sohra by the afternoon and witness the spectacular Nohkalikai Falls at sunset. Stay overnight in Sohra.
Trekking the Living Root Bridges
Leave your vehicle at the parking area in Tyrna village and begin the steep descent to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. This is a physically demanding trek (over 3,000 steps each way), so start early. After a grueling but rewarding hike, soak your tired muscles in the natural blue pools. Return to your Sohra accommodation for a well-deserved rest.
Dawki & The Cleanest Village in Asia
Drive down from the cool heights of Sohra to the tropical India-Bangladesh border. Check out our Dawki & Mawlynnong Expedition Guide for the best routes. Take a mesmerizing boat ride on the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River, and spend your afternoon walking through Mawlynnong village. Camp by the riverside in Shnongpdeng for the night.
Krang Suri Waterfalls & Jowai
Take the incredibly scenic NH106 route driving up towards Jowai. The highlight of the day is Krang Suri—a magical waterfall with striking, copper-blue water. It’s one of the best locations for a swim (life jackets are mandatory and available on-site). After drying off, cruise the smooth highway back up to Shillong for your final night.
Umiam Lake & Departure
On your final morning, ride out to Umiam Lake (Barapani), a massive and serene reservoir just outside Shillong. It’s the perfect place to reflect on your journey before returning your vehicle to our garage and catching your taxi back to Guwahati airport.
